welcome to your Thursday dose of Mife, How are you guys doing? Did you miss me on Monday? I am starting a new colour scheme on the blog, I know you would love this one as it’s such a unique colour. Today I want to talk about how you can improve yourself while trying to get your dream job. These are also steps I am taking as well so I thought I share.
High Competition: A couple of years ago, having an undergraduate degree was a privilege But these days more people go to University, so you have to add more to your resume to stand out. Going to the university to have a degree doesn’t give you enough leverage nowadays. Think about it this way; about 400 of us graduated from just my school this year and thousands more all over the country. This gives you a picture of how vast the market is and shows you how much you need to do to stand out.
No Skills: I am currently doing MySQL , acquiring skills is something you have to do to get ahead, you need to acquire as much skill as you can. I also want to get some coding skills to help boost my skill set. There are so many skills you can add to your resume that alines with the industry you want to get into. Some Skills you can acquire are excel, photography, leadership courses, project management, tax systems, coding, and so many more. Visit sites like Udemy to find outcourse you can take.
My best one is Little or no experience: this is personally a category I fall into especially for the career path I want to take. This also relates to my first point as there are so many people now having a university degree you need to be one step ahead of your pairs. My advice is if you know the industry you want to get into, start doing internships or working part-time in this industry. This gives you so much leverage and could potentially land you the job of yourdreams. I wish I had taken this more seriously or was well informed about the importance of internships while I was in uni.
It’s unfair I know because uni is hard on its own but its what you have to do get that good graduate job these days.
Networking: Networking is really an important skill to have in life. I am so bad at networking but I am trying and constantly putting in an effort to network with people. Networking helps you get referrals and exposes you to opportunities. It can help you get an understanding of the role you want to get or career path you intend to take. Please if you can, go to networking events and meet as many people as you can. I would have to do a whole blog post on this as it is so essential in
